About this role
Summary: Master thesis position at Ericsson's R&D center focusing on advanced AI topics in the telecom sector. Candidates will tackle engineering challenges, build prototypes, and benchmark AI approaches for network planning, monitoring, and operations.
At the Ericsson R&D center in Aachen-Herzogenrath, we shape and explore how AI is transforming the way telecom networks are planned, monitored, and operated. We are currently offering Master thesis positions at the intersection of AI and telecom, where you will tackle a real engineering challenge, build a prototype, and benchmark competing approaches.
Possible Master thesis topics:
- Fine-Tuning and Adapting Large Language Models for Telecom Networks – Building Telecom-Specialized AI: Fine-Tuning LLMs for Network Engineering
- AI-Powered Observability of Telecom Networks – Making Telecom Networks Explain Themselves: AI-Driven Network Observability
- Intelligent Data Governance and Management for AI – Trustworthy Data for AI: Intelligent Data Governance in Telecom
- AI-Ready Telecom Data Lakes – From Data Lake to AI Knowledge Hub: Enabling LLMs with Telecom Data
- Testing and Verification of LLM-Based Systems – Can We Trust AI? Automated Testing and Verification of LLMs for Telecom Applications
- AI for Automated Network Dimensioning and Capacity Planning – Self-Planning Networks: AI-Based Network Dimensioning and Capacity Forecasting
- AI Agents for Telecom Network Engineering Automation – From Copilots to Autonomous Workflows: AI Agents for Telecom Network Operations
You'll get the opportunity to
- Be assigned to one of the thesis topics above, aligned with your interests, background, and skills. Master theses usually run for six to eight months.
- Tackle a real telecom engineering challenge and deliver a working prototype, framework, or reference architecture.
- Benchmark AI approaches against baselines using measurable indicators such as accuracy, robustness, and efficiency.
- Create practical impact, from improved anomaly detection and root-cause analysis and AI-ready data to actionable capacity recommendations and safely automated workflows.
- Collaborate with experienced researchers and other students in a truly international team.
Key skills
- Master's student in Computer Science, AI, Data Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Digital Transformation, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.
- Python skills (plus SQL for data-oriented topics).
- Foundations in machine learning, data analysis, or mathematical modeling, and basic knowledge of LLMs, NLP, data pipelines, or software testing and integration, depending on the topic.
- Strong interest in at least one thesis area: LLM fine-tuning and RAG, network observability, data governance, data platforms, trustworthy AI, capacity planning, or AI agents.
- An analytical, curious mindset, structured problem-solving, awareness of reliability and security, and clear communication of results.
Nice to have (not mandatory)
- Telecom networks or capacity engineering.
- Time-series analysis, anomaly detection, or operations research.
- Embeddings, vector databases, prompt engineering, tool calling, or orchestration frameworks.
- Automated testing frameworks or statistical evaluation.
