The Hertie School is recruiting a

Postdoctoral Research Fellow / Data Scientist (m/f/div)

on a full time basis (40 hours/week)

for the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS).

The contract shall start in May 2019 (or as soon as feasible after May 1) and is for an initial two-year period that can be renewed.

As a postdoctoral research fellow / data scientist, you support the coordination, collection and analysis of large quantities of data in the context of different research projects, and you are in charge of the SCRIPTS data portal. You will be based in the Hertie School Data Science Lab and be associated with the SCRIPTS Data and Methodology Center.

Your tasks:
Organise and support the collection, storage and analysis of large quantities of data in the context of different research projects including a comparative survey
Develop and maintain SCRIPTS’ data portal, as well as develop and deploy tools to improve data science workflows
Support and contribute to the activities of SCRIPTS’ Data and Methodology Center and the Hertie School Data Science Lab
Develop and pursue innovative personal research agenda


Hertie School of Governance


Completed a PhD with a significant empirical and computational component
Interest in social science problems and the Cluster’s research topic
Expertise and experience in management of large quantities of data as well as knowledge and skills in security best practices in such environment
Significant experience with coding (especially in Python)
Experience with relational databases
Experience with current methods in statistical modelling and machine learning and distributed processing tools
Excellent English skills
Experience with coordinating research groups is an asset
Good writing skills, as evidenced by publications in relevant venues are an asset
