Overview
Appen is looking to hire a computational linguist/Natural Language Processing (NLP) specialist to work on the development and implementation of NLP applications for Machine Translation (MT), for English-to-Japanese MT in particular.
Tasks
For the job at hand the candidate will implement re-ordering of the English source text constituents based on grammatical features of the sentence so as to make it better match the word order of the Japanese target text. The idea is to make the word order in the English source text resemble that of the Japanese target text prior to sending the sentence in for translation in order to obtain better translations.
The re-ordering logic will have to make use of word and/or phrase alignments between source and target text and will have to indicate the required word order and alignment information for the re-ordered English source sentence. The candidate will assist software engineers with integrating the re-ordering logic into the client’s proprietary NLP/Machine Learning framework.

Requirements
• Basic Qualifications:
o Post-graduate degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics or other relevant field
o Proficient in working in a Unix work environment
o NLP experience
• Preferred Qualifications:
o Post-graduate degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or other relevant field
• Practical background in Natural Language Processing or Computational Linguistics, including experience with
statistical approaches to named entity recognition and information extraction; previous work in MT-related NLP for English
to/from Japanese systems is a plus
• Strong software development skills, preferably in Java or else in C, C++
• Experience in applying machine learning technologies is a plus

o Must be native speaker of Japanese
