Senior Researcher

Overview

The Machine Translation team, part of Azure Cognitive Services, builds and runs the translation service that powers translations in Teams, Skype, Bing, Office and Windows, as well as translation apps on iOS and Android. The service is also used by thousands of companies around the world to translate everything from social media to technical documents.

We are looking for a Senior Researcher to help build world-class machine translation systems. The ideal candidate should be passionate about cutting-edge research in various machine translation areas, such as large-scale models, customization, analysis, adaptation, evaluation, robustness, and efficient training & inference. You will work on achieving the world’s best Machine Translation quality, leveraging all the resources that Microsoft has to offer.

Our team has a variety of backgrounds and areas of expertise. Candidates with the following profiles are especially encouraged to apply:

Deep background in machine translation
Familiarity with development, fine-tuning, or optimization of LLM (Large Language Models) training and inference
Knowledge of inference speed optimization, quantization of neural models, CUDA/ROCm GPU programming, etc.
Background in NLP (Natural Language Processing) model evaluation, including human evaluation, or statistical background;
Experience with web-scale (text) data engineering and processing
Extensive experience with multi-lingual modelling.

Qualifications:

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate in relevant field
OR equivalent experience.
Proven track record of publications in Machine Translation, Natural Language Processing, or Machine Learning related conferences (e.g., ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, WMT, ICML, NeurIPS, CHI, etc.)
3+ years experience in building deep learning models with PyTorch or similar tools
Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or relevant field AND 2+ years related research experience
OR equivalent experience.
Experience publishing academic papers as a lead author or essential contributor.
Experience participating in a top conference in relevant research domain.
Ability to define and solve research problems and transfer to production

Solid proficiency in C++ or Python

A proven track record of open source tools/models.
