Thomson Reuters’ Research & Development team (http://labs.thomsonreuters.com/) is a group of scientists and engineers whose mission is to help our businesses design and develop innovative and differentiating products. The team performs applied research in a number of areas including natural language processing, information retrieval, recommender systems, machine learning, text mining, data mining, tools & algorithms for Big Data, social computing and quantitative finance. The team’s portfolio includes projects requested from our business units as well as strategic projects intended to research emerging areas relevant to our company, to explore the art of the possible and to influence business directions.
The Research Director/Manager will lead and mentor a team of researchers at our Eagan, MN campus (one of four of our group’s sites). He or she will be tasked with defining and developing state-of-the-art information-based solutions for professionals around the world. This is a hands-on position and requires significant expertise in one or more of our research focus areas.
We are open to applicants with backgrounds at the Manager or Director level.
Responsibilities:
• Lead a team of 3 to 5 researchers and be responsible for managing multiple projects
• Conduct applied research using proprietary data, including usage data, to develop and apply novel search, natural language processing and/or machine learning algorithms.
• Work on projects in collaboration with fellow researchers and business stakeholders to make an impact on Thomson Reuters products.
• Synthesize and present findings to technical and business audiences
• Maintain an active scientific presence through peer-reviewed publications, conference attendance, program committee membership, and keynote talks

Qualifications:
Qualifications
• Masters or PhD in computer science, computational linguistics, applied mathematics or a related discipline. A PhD degree is not required, but preferred.
• At least 5 years of experience in applied research in one or more of our focus areas: natural language processing, information retrieval, recommender systems, machine learning, text mining, data mining, tools & algorithms for Big Data, social computing or quantitative finance.
• Outstanding track record in applied research and in developing solutions for real world problems.
• Experience working with very large and diverse data sets and distributed computing paradigms (map/reduce).
• Strong working knowledge of statistical data analysis and experiment design.
• Solid programming skills (e.g. in Java, Python, Perl, R or C/C++)
• Outstanding oral and written communication skills as well as ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
• Proven leadership skills, including experience building and developing teams.
• Experience working with legal, financial, news data and applications is a plus.
