Position Description
The Department of Computer Science and the Department of
Mathematics at Texas State University seeks applications for two
tenure- track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor,
Associate Professor and/or Professor ranks. The appointments will
be at least 60% in one of the departments. The primary department
will depend on the qualifications of the candidate.
The successful candidate is expected to establish and maintain a
strong record of high-quality research in Data Science, Machine
Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. The successful candidate
will teach mathematics and/or computer science courses at the
undergraduate and graduate levels and will show dedication to
mentoring students. The successful candidate will also participate
in self-governance of the primary department through service to the
department, college, and university, and engage in service to the
professional community
The Department of Mathematics is a growing department with a broad
range of strengths in Analysis, Topology, Algebra, Combinatorics,
Statistics (including Data Science and Machine Learning), Applied
Mathematics, Logic, and Mathematics Education. The department is
excited to start its new Ph.D. program in mathematics in Fall 2025
to complement its Ph.D. program in mathematics education and its
master’s programs. Our faculty members have over $3 million in
active grants. Our faculty members include a Sloan Fellow and
multiple NSF CAREER awardees.
The Department of Computer Science is dedicated to advancing
excellence in both education and research. Our faculty are actively
engaged in transformative research across diverse areas, with
particular strengths in artificial intelligence and machine
learning, cybersecurity and networks, human-computer interaction,
high-performance computing, and software engineering. Faculty
members have received prestigious awards, including faculty awards
from Facebook, Google, and IBM, multiple NSF CAREER awards, a DOE
Early Career, and a PECASE award. The Ph.D. program is the first in
Texas to combine advanced computer science theory and practice with
entrepreneurial and commercialization skills, preparing students to
become leaders in both academia and industry.
Both the Mathematics and Computer Science departments strive to
create a welcoming environment that invites students from a wide
range of backgrounds to major in mathematics and computer science.
We invite applicants who are enthusiastic about mentoring students
at undergraduate and graduate levels to reach their
potential.
Both departments are dedicated to success of their junior faculty,
providing support through formal mentoring, reduced teaching and
service loads, collaboration and collegiality, and opportunities to
participate in university-wide professional development
programs.Both departments are in the College of Science and
Engineering and will be moving into a newly constructed building in
Fall 2026.
The Austin-San Antonio area has many opportunities for
collaborations outside of the university and increasing demand for
expertise in AI and data science. Major companies such as Dell,
Tesla, Google, IBM, AMD and Apple have a large presence in the
Austin area. San Antonio is home to USAA and Rackspace and is a
center for healthcare and biosciences. Many of our faculty have
collaborations with industry and nearby universities.
The selected candidate will be given the appropriate rank based on
experience, and college and university regulations.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications (Assistant
Professor):
• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer
Science or a closely related field prior to employment.
• Evidence of or potential for research excellence in Data
Science, Machine Learning, and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recent
publications will be emphasized, but all publications will be
considered.
• Evidence of or potential to obtain external funding
• Evidence of or potential for excellence in teaching and
mentoring students.
• An ability to contribute to the primary departmental
mission.
Required Qualifications (Associate
Professor):
• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer
Science or a closely related field.
• Evidence of research excellence in Data Science, Machine
Learning and/or Artificial Intelligence. Recent publications will
be emphasized, but all publications will be considered.
• Evidence of having obtained research grants.
• Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring students.
• Ability to contribute to the mission of the primary
department.
Required Qualifications (Professor):
• An earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer
Science or a closely related field
• Evidence of a sustained record of research excellence in Data
Science, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence. Recent
publications will be emphasized, but all publications will be
considered
• Evidence of a sustained record of obtaining research
grants
• Evidence of excellence in teaching and mentoring students
• Ability to contribute to the mission of the primary
department
