Overview

We’re looking for a talented software engineer with experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to join our early-stage, fast-paced Oxford University AI startup that aims to empower everyone to better plan their future careers.

You will play a key role in designing and engineering our first product: a brand-new greenfield project to help people of all backgrounds and job seekers find their dream careers. This product will be our first step towards achieving our company’s mission of transforming the recruitment landscape for the better.

We’re a very small team in the early stages of our platform and product, so we’re looking for individuals that want to be highly involved in a new startup from the beginning. We need people who can use their enthusiasm for building things, interest in start-up culture and intensity, with experience and knowledge about AI, including machine learning, knowledge graphs, especially NLP.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Here’s a snapshot of the types of… projects you will be involved in when you join us:
• Interactive Chatbot for Careers Guidance – Lost on jobs boards and don’t know where to start? With a quickly changing labour market most people can’t keep up with new specialisms and job titles popping up every few months. Veer’s looking to deliver a chatbot to help jobseekers navigate the ever changing environment with dynamically updating jobs data and trends.
• Developing a Roles & Skills Ontology – Each sector has its own jargon, with specific roles and terms – but it’s impossible to keep up. Veer is building a roles and skills knowledge base which is able to distil this information into clear cut roles and skills with relationships between them. We’re looking to experiment and understand: how to use ML to map out seniority relationships between roles, different specialisms, and super/supra-classifications.
• Visual Exploration of Careers & LMI Knowledge – While Veer will be powered by AI – that’s only half the story – as visualisation and UI/UX will be essential in making these insights accessible to jobseekers. We’re trying to work out how best to merge our job market insights with a dynamic UI/UX which allows users with little-to-no prior knowledge of the careers landscape to begin their search.

DESIRED
• A brilliant junior/intermediate software engineer ideally with a minimum of 1-2 years of industry experience (but highly talented graduates also encouraged to apply).
• Strong, meticulous, and fast programming skills across a variety of popular languages, stacks, and environments, but with a deep proficiency in modern Python.
• Interest in working for a rapid-paced AI startup within a small agile team.
• Fundamentals of Machine Learning and experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras or Jax and HuggingFace Transformers.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
• Natural Language Processing expertise and experience developing applications, especially in applying transformer architectures and Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Computer systems expertise; familiarity with DevOps, cloud architectures, containerization and orchestration technologies

OPTIONAL
• Experience or background in data science
• Domain expertise in the realm of recruitment and the labour market, including understanding job opportunities, roles, and skills

THE ROLE
• Working with the rest of the team to plan, design and engineer product features based on technical feasibility
• Productionising ML and AI solutions for deployment to the cloud
• Creating domain-specific document representations, applying clustering algorithms to large datasets, designing and training bespoke deep learning modules in the language domain, interfacing with LLMs.
• Designing, implementing, and testing a careers guide chatbot: integrating and productionising off-the-shelf LLM APIs, fine-tuning open-source conversational models.Applying emerging ML techniques to solve challenges in the real world. Selecting and motivating solutions fit for purpose, based on good overall understanding of ML practices

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
• Hybrid and flexible working with offices in London.
• A chance to truly shape the development of a brand new product and make your opinions heard as a founding member of the team.
• Stock options.
• TBD! You can help us shape our company benefits as a member of the team.
