Overview
Three new lecturer positions have become available at the University of
Essex’s School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, one of
which, in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence:
would be suitable for researchers with a focus on computational
linguistics or logics and AI.
The University of Essex has a long tradition in computational
linguistics: next year we will celebrate 40 years since Yorick Wilks
joined the University, and over the following years a number of
distinguished members of our community graduated or otherwise spent some
time among us as post-doctoral researchers or faculty. At present, the
University’s interdisciplinary Language and Computation Group:
numbers over 20 faculty, postdocs and PhDs also from the Department of
Language and Linguistics and from the Data Archive, whose research
covers a number of areas including adaptive search, anaphora resolution
/ coreference, Arabic NLP, constraint-based grammar, crowdsourcing and
games-with-a-purpose for NLP, information extraction, formal semantics
and semantic interpretation, neuroscience and NLP, social media, and
summarization. We are heavily involved in the EPSRC’s Doctoral Training
Centre in Games and AI
and in a number of ESRC funded research centres in the social sciences,
including the recently funded Centre for Big Data and Human Rights, as
well as in a number of other projects.
AI is one of the key research areas in the School of Computer Science
and Electronic Engineering, with strong groups in BCI, Games and AI,
Intelligent Environments, Machine Learning, and Robotics, with all of
which we have active collaborations. We also have active collaborations
with the Departments of Law, Government and Sociology, and with the
Department of Psychology’s Centre for Brain Science.
The University of Essex is a great place to work and we are located in a
lovely part of the country, with easy access to the sea and to London
