Scientific Area: Computer science / Natural Language Processing / Text Mining
Admission requirements: The candidates should have a PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Informatics or a related discipline. Special relevance will be given to the candidates with experience in Natural Language Processing. Preference will be given to candidates with a combination of the following skills: data and text mining, machine learning, communication and fluency in English.
Objectives and Work plan: The work plan includes scientific and technological research tasks carried out in order to support R&D activities in Text Mining for the health domain, especially in the subject of Information and Relation Extraction from textual documents. The work will be framed and developed within the CICS-UBI (http://www.cics.ubi.pt/) and HULTIG (http://hultig.di.ubi.pt/) centers. In particular, the selected candidate will engage in the development of the following tasks: (1) Identification of a number of key elements and relations, naturally occurring in text from the health domain; (2) Supervise and handle the construction of a new reference corpus, where these key elements and relations will be appropriately marked; (3) Explore well suited Machine Learning algorithms for automatically identify and extract those elements and relations from massive volumes of text; and (4) Elaboration of scientific reports and articles and dissemination of the results in national and international scientific events.
Legislation and applicable regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Grant approved by the Law 40/2004, August 18th, in its current wording, as well as the Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology IP (FCT) (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2018.pdf ).
Workplace and Scientific supervision: The workplace will be at UBImedical, University of Beira Interior (Covilhã, Portugal), under the scientific guidance of Prof. João Cordeiro.
Duration: 21 months, renewable for a further 3 months if the end date of the project is extended. The duration of the grant will include an initial probationary period of 3 months.
Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance: The monthly amount of the grant is €1495 in accordance with the values stipulated by the “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources” of FCT (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en).
The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.
The voluntary social insurance is added to the value of the grant, if the candidate chooses to join it, as well as the personal accident insurance.

Selection criteria: The selection methods to be used will be composed by 2 evaluation phases, according to the following: 1st phase – Curricular evaluation; 2nd phase – Interview, which can be performed via videoconference.
The evaluation in the 1st phase includes the following criteria: Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation (50%); Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (50%).
The 3 candidates that present the highest scores after the 1st phase will pass to the 2nd phase.
