The NASA Pathways Intern Employment Program (IEP) provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience.

This Pathway Intern position is for an engineering student trainee who will work within the Intelligent Systems Division (Code TI) in the Exploration Technology Directorate (Code T) at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA. The intern will assist in integration, design, and implementation of information management systems to support NASA space mission operations (ground, onboard, and payload), as well as NASA science, engineering, aeronautics, and infrastructure applications. The intern will focus on a wide range of data-related problems, including acquisition, preparation, integration, search, mining, analysis, storage, and security.

The intern will work in the Collaborative Assistant Systems Technical Area in support of Ground/Flight Data Systems, Enterprise Information Management, Information Integration Systems, Data Repository Systems, or Decision Support Systems. The intern will perform increasingly advanced activities based on their academic study and may rotate between the various groups within the technical area.

You must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science at an institution accredited by the Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, go to http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/. Degrees in engineering technology are not qualifying for this position. Engineering degree programs must be from a school with at least one engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). To find out if a degree meets this requirement, go to http://www.abet.org.

The following majors are preferred: Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

*For Computer Science major/degree: Upon conversion, intern MUST have included (or be supplemented by) 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science that provide in-depth knowledge of the following: (1) theoretical foundations and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; and (2) essential mathematical and statistical techniques. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics that include differential and integral calculus.

Additional information
As identical vacancies are identified, additional selections may be made.

You must meet eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed, student trainee work experience, and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

You will be expected to comply with policies located at: Ames Pathways Programs.

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completion of degree requirements provided they:

Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.90 (on a 4.00 scale);
Complete a minimum of 640 hours (equivalent to 4 months of full-time/8 months of part time) of work experience before completing degree requirements;
Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
Maintain acceptable performance.

If you are converted, you may be further promoted up to the GS-13 level. Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion. At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.
