About our team:
The posts will be located in the Interaction Lab at Heriot Watt University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Science (MACS), see http://www.macs.hw.ac.uk/InteractionLab . The successful candidates will join a group of about 15 people, consisting of postdoctoral and Phd researchers and faculty with expertise in NLP, machine learning, HRI, and multimodal interfaces. Our current projects involve collaborations with Aldebaran Robotics, the University of Glasgow, IDIAP (Geneva), LAAS (Toulouse), and the BBC.
The main research duties are to implement and evaluate socially intelligent conversational interfaces for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), and to collect and analyse multimodal HRI data. Experience with machine learning approaches in AI and spoken dialogue systems / NLP is highly desirable. The successful applicants will also present the research outputs at project meetings and international conferences.
The main duties of the posts are to perform collaborative research on the EC Horizon 2020 project “MuMMER” (Multimodal Mall Entertainment Robot), to contribute to EC deliverables and research publications, to write and submit research articles, and to participate in EC project research meetings and international conferences.
Two positions are available, at grade 7 or 8 depending on experience. Both positions are for 36 months duration, with opportunities for extension dependent on performance and future funding applications.
Key duties and responsibilities:
To implement and evaluate socially intelligent interfaces for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI);
To implement HRI applications using machine learning techniques for dialogue management; Natural Language understanding, and Natural Language generation;
To collect and analyse multimodal HRI data;
Experience (at PhD level or equivalent) with Human-Robot Interaction, AI, Machine Learning, NLP, dialogue systems or related research areas
Software development in Java and/or C++ and/or Python and/or Matlab
Collaborative research experience.
Prior research in the field of HRI
Research experience with speech recognition and synthesis
Research experience with computer vision methods in HRI
