Heriot-Watt University, School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences Research Associate in Machine Learning, Crowd-Sourcing and Natural Language Generation Grade 7-8 (£30,434 – £45,954) Applications are sought for a Research Associate post in the Interaction Lab in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The Research Assistant will work on the EPSRC project “DILiGENt – Domain-Independent Language Generation” (EP/M005429/1)” to investigate, develop, and evaluate advanced machine learning approaches for natural language generation systems. In particular, we seek a candidate with experience in statistical approaches to natural language generation or closely related fields, data collection, and system evaluation. The post will be located in the Interaction Lab at Heriot Watt University’s School of Mathematics and Computer Science (MACS), see www.macs.hw.ac.uk/InteractionLab. The successful candidate will join and collaborate with a group of 8 postdoctoral researchers. The project also involves collaboration between Heriot-Watt University (V. Rieser, O. Lemon), Sheffield University (A. Vlachos) and University College London (S. Riedel). The post is to be filled ASAP and available for two years in the first instance, with opportunities for extension. Principal Duties: Detailed research duties are to implement and evaluate methods for statistical natural language generation, and to collect and analyse online data using crowd-sourcing. The successful applicant will also present the research outputs at project meetings and international conferences. The main duties of the post are to perform collaborative research on the above-named EPSRC project, to contribute to research publications, to write and submit research articles, and to participate in EPSRC project research meetings and international conferences. Key Objectives:
- To implement and evaluate methods for statistical natural language generation.
- To collect and analyse online data using crowd-sourcing.
- To contribute dissemination activities as specified in the project Technical Annexes.
- Experience (at PhD level or equivalent) in natural language generation systems, machine learning, crowd-sourcing or closely related fields.
- Experience in statistical modelling and analysis.
- Experience with experimental data collection and analysis.
- Programming in Java and/or C++ and/or Python and/or Matlab.
