The Inria team Alpage conducts research in Digital Humanities (DH), an area at the intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities such as History, Literature or Philology. In the recent years, ambitious platforms have been developed for the dissemination of primary data, for instance resulting from mass digitalizations of historical texts, or the production of metadata and knowledge in relation to Arts and Humanities. The availability of these digital resources is creating a new range of opportunities, in particular in conjunction with text and data mining, to help researchers in their projects.
Our Inria team is developing or contributing to the several state-of-the-art Open Source projects to address these needs and the explosion of scholarly information. Our approach is, as far as possible, independent from a specific domain and rely on machine learning to avoid costly manual effort. These tools are not only used in research activities, in several European projects, but also by a broader audience, including commercial services.
