Overview

The Department of Linguistics at the University of North Texas invites
applications at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with a primary
specialization in Computational Linguistics with the additional
responsibility of Chair of Department of Linguistics. The department chair
holds a 12-month appointment. While the area of specialization in
computational linguistics is open, we seek candidates who are active
researchers in topics that complement existing departmental strengths (such
as corpus-based research, low-resource language documentation and resource
creation). Evidence of an active research agenda, a track record in grant
acquisition, and a strong commitment to innovative teaching is required for
consideration.

In addition to the administrative responsibilities as Chair of the
Linguistics Department, the successful candidate will be expected to:

– Contribute to the ongoing development of the Department’s degree programs
in linguistics and computational linguistics;
– Initiate new interdisciplinary collaborations and expand existing ones
with other computational research groups on campus, in particular in
Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Information Science;
– Spearhead efforts to recruit new students at the undergraduate and
graduate levels;
– Work to build partnerships and internship opportunities with local
industry;
– Develop new relationships and strengthen existing ones with international
partners;
– Build and cultivate alumni relations;
– Provide leadership in growing research efforts of the department,
including grants and publications;
– Seek innovative funding opportunities for the department.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
A PhD in Linguistics, Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Information
Science or other related field with a strong background in computational
linguistics / natural language processing is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Desirable qualifications include previous supervisory experience in an
administrative position with budgeting authority and a demonstrated record
of or potential for high-quality educational leadership, especially in the
areas of curriculum and program development.

Specific requirements:

This is *NOT* a visiting position – we are looking for a new person to
contribute to the exciting growth of our department in the area of
computational linguistics.
