As a Computational Linguist at MI5, you will identify, plan and conduct research and development work on cutting edge projects relating to speech processing technologies.

You will be building and adapting models for speaker and language identification, automatic speech recognition and machine translation.

This will see you working at the forefront of this fast-evolving field alongside commercial experts and other partner agencies, developing new capabilities to support the work of analysts.

The person

You will need to be able to apply theory and technical skills on a practical and pragmatic basis, and communicate highly complex technical information verbally and in writing to a range of audiences.

Team working skills, flexibility and a strong customer service ethos are also vital in this role.




It is likely that you are a graduate with a genuine interest in linguistics, language and speech processing technologies.

You may have studied Computational Linguistics, Mathematics, Signal Processing or Statistics. It is important that you have knowledge of modelling and coding.

Ideally, you are experienced in Linux, Python, C# or Java programming. You may also have knowledge of the Phonetics and Phonology of English and/or another language, Socio Linguistics or Speech Science.
