Analytical Linguists work across Google to drive improvements in quality, classification, information structure, and natural language understanding and generation. As an Analytical Linguist you will work both on complex projects spanning multiple products, groups, and disciplines, and on tightly focused efforts to produce specific product components or answer specific research questions. Analytical Linguists work in many different areas and arrive with a wide variety of skills—your specialization might involve natural language processing and understanding, phonology, phonetics, syntax, semantics, ontology, program management, human subject research, experimental design, statistics, corpus linguistics, large scale data acquisition, or any combination. Understanding natural language is at the core of Google’s technologies. The Natural Language Understanding (NLU) team in Google Research guides, builds, and innovates methodologies around semantic analysis and representation, syntactic parsing and realization, morphology and lexicon development. Current research focuses on discourse and dialogue systems. Our work directly impacts Conversational Search in Google Now, the Knowledge Graph, and Google Translate, as well as other Machine Intelligence research.
You’ll collaborate with Researchers and Engineers in NLU/ Machine Intelligence to produce analyses and high quality data that improve our ability to understand and generate natural language. Many linguists focus on one or more languages in which they have special expertise, and propose directions and solutions to language-specific problems.

We’re responsible for guiding products throughout the execution cycle, focusing specifically on analyzing, positioning, packaging, promoting and tailoring our solutions to all the markets where Google does business.
Work closely with researchers and engineers by providing linguistic expertise and direction for language specific NLP, ASR/TTS projects and/or dialogue analysis and modeling.
Train and/or evaluate NLP or ASR/TTS/dialogue systems and propose solutions.
Propose and run research experiments around linguistic phenomena.
Create annotation guidelines and instructions for vendors and linguists; recruit, hire and train linguistic experts for high impact projects, as well as manage and oversee a team of linguists, vendors and/or remote workers.
Monitor data acquisition and curation; design quality control methodology, experiments, implementation and improvements.
PhD in Linguistics, or Computational Linguistics, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience in semantics, syntax, morphology, phonetics, phonology, and/or discourse; Experience with scripting languages working in a Linux environment.
Experience developing projects or curricula from concept to completion and collaborating internationally with multiple partners on multi-quarter projects.
Ability to speak and write in English fluently and idiomatically.
Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) research or related fields.
Familiarity with experimental design, research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative analysis; Familiarity with Python, C++ or other programming languages.
Independent worker with the ability to effectively operate with flexibility in a fast paced, constantly evolving team environment. Team player with exceptional interpersonal and solution-oriented attitude.
Creative thinker with strong problem solving and analytical skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to travel internationally.
Fluency in one or more of the following: French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Finnish, Polish, Indic languages and/or LatAm Spanish.
