IBM has long been at the forefront of AI and computing innovation, from chess-playing Deep Blue to Jeopardy!-winning Watson. Now IBM’s customers expect that AI technologies will solve their most difficult problems, including new problems they haven’t even imagined yet. We are rising to that awesome challenge, and we’re looking for talented, smart people who enjoy solving challenging AI research problems.

We believe IBM’s AI technologies can and will change lives for the better because they extend human abilities to recognize and solve a wide variety of problems – from daily, routine problems (such as dispatching delivery vehicles dynamically to avoid traffic and maximize successful deliveries) to planetary environmental challenges. IBM’s AI is all about empowering people.

IBM Research constantly pushes the limits of technology and engineering to develop the AI technologies of the future, to help individuals reach their full potential. Lately, we are advancing the state-of-the-art in natural language interpretation (including spoken language); audio, photographic, and video analysis; and analysis of many other types of information from sensors and from other, new devices. We are pioneering cutting edge, cognitive approaches to making optimum decisions – approaches that apply to robotics, virtual agents, and other learning systems. Some new technologies even attract widespread public attention through “grand challenges,” such as IBM Watson and its ever improving natural language capabilities. Other innovations more quietly change the world for the better. While we enjoy and appreciate the attention, what makes us most happy is delighting our customers and helping them succeed.

An IBM researcher typically has a diversified, multifaceted professional life. Clear, effective, expert communication with industry, customers, IBM communities, and even sometimes the press is important. Writing high quality research papers for journals, presenting at academic conferences, and preparing patent submissions are common tasks, all with the researchers’ names clearly attached. (IBM is the global leader in patent submissions and approvals, a strong indication of how much innovation our researchers contribute to the world.) Some communication is in International English, both written and verbal, so the strongest candidates will have at least reasonable English language capabilities. We encourage researchers to meet directly with customers, including with prospective customers who may never have even thought of IBM before, to hear their unfiltered views and to understand their challenges. While we certainly have focus areas and strategic directions, we deeply respect our researchers’ individual interests. History proves that many breakthroughs are “accidental,” based on researchers having the freedom and resources to pursue “hunches” to see where they lead. We believe in “happy accidents,” too.
