Overview

We are seeking applications from talented and strongly motivated Computer
Scientists interested in studying for a funded Ph.D. on the intersection of
Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning under the supervision of
Dr Andreas Vlachos (http://andreasvlachos.github.io/).

The student can focus on a variety of topics, including structured
prediction, natural language understanding and generation, and automated
fact checking. He/she will interact with members of the Natural Language
Processing (https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/dcs/research/groups/nlp) and the
Machine Learning (
https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/dcs/research/groups/machine-learning) groups at
the University of Sheffield, both among the best-established research
groups in the UK.

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield, within
the Faculty of Engineering, was established in 1982 and has since attained
an international reputation for its research and teaching. Currently there
are over 100 members of staff in Computer Science, including 35 Academics.
The Department has consistently rated highly in UK national research
assessment exercises.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have an excellent first degree in Computer Science, or a
closely related subject, and have excellent programming and analytical
skills. Previous exposure to natural language processing and/or machine
learning would be advantageous, as is any previous experience of carrying
out research.
