The Information Retrieval Laboratory of the University of Milano-Bicocca (http://www.ir.disco.unimib.it) and the HPC lab of ISTI-CNR in Pisa (http://hpc.isti.cnr.it) have a 3-year PhD studentship available. The goal of the joint PhD studentship is to develop novel deep learning techniques for next generation context-aware recommendation and search systems. The research moves from the considerable advances made in ad-hoc document ranking based on machine learning and deep neural networks techniques. It is widely known that these techniques, neural methods in particular, require large training dataset. This constraint hinders their applicability to tasks where large labeled dataset are scarse or not available at all. The student is expected to investigate how transfer learning and weak supervision techniques can be exploited to overcome this issue.
The PhD studentship will greatly benefit from the common competences of both institutions, i.e., excellent research teams in information retrieval, web search and machine learning.
